Home » A Box and a Puzzle

In this story, you’ll learn the following:

  • The syllabus initiated an experiential learning journey.
  • Students participated in dynamic, interactive activities.
  • Stricter governance challenged instructor autonomy.
  • Tension between academic freedom and authority.
  • Educators require space for innovation within boundaries.

Experiential Learning Syllabus Redesign

The syllabus arrived first. Later, I found myself staring at a box and a puzzle that would shape the rest of the course.

It contained the required course outline, concepts, and learning expectations. The instructor did not throw it away. She opened it, examined it, and redesigned the route through which students would encounter it.

A textbook could provide a case.

But a sidewalk vendor could provide a live one.

An ambulant vendor could explain the enterprise differently.

A kiosk operator could reveal decisions that never appeared in a corporate case.

Experiential Learning Project

So students went outside, interviewed people, observed enterprises, and returned to the classroom carrying something a textbook could not provide: encountered reality.

Occasionally, the classroom became a puzzle room.

Students hunted Pokémon with their gizmos. They explored their environment and returned with observations. Then the theories came out.

“Okay. What did we just see?”

Redesigned Classroom Activities and Assessment

The technology was optional. Students without gizmos worked with classmates who had them. The activity became an opportunity to use technology and to meet, collaborate, and learn from one another.

Even quizzes were redesigned.

Students could use online resources, explore them, and cite what they found within the activity period.

The question was no longer simply, “What do you remember?”

It became: “What can you find, examine, use, and articulate?”

Engaged Learning Experience

The syllabus remained. But the classroom was alive. There was music and art. Likewise, there was laughter.

There were jokes, taglines, strange voices, unexpected questions, student observations, and the occasional classroom moment that nobody had planned beforehand.

The course outline was still being covered. The students simply did not experience it as a march through a list.

Instructor Control Shift

Then leadership changed. The new administrator wanted tighter control. A particular book was to be prescribed. The instructor’s activities came under scrutiny. Permission became increasingly important.

The teacher who had been trusted to teach suddenly experienced something different: “Don’t do that without permission.”

The classroom had been a place where students were encouraged to investigate uncertainty. Now the teacher was being asked to operate with less uncertainty herself. And a question emerged:

If a university expects students to develop critical thinking, how much intellectual and professional discretion must it allow the people teaching them?

University Governance vs. Professional Autonomy

The issue was not whether a university should have governance. It should. The issue was whether governance meant setting legitimate boundaries and holding professionals accountable, or whether it meant controlling ordinary professional decisions that had already been delegated to them.

Those are not the same thing. Academic freedom did not mean the instructor could ignore the syllabus, institutional policies, ethical obligations, or legitimate academic standards. But neither did the existence of institutional authority automatically mean that every pedagogical choice required personal authorization.

The instructor had not been asking for anarchy. She was asking for room to teach. And then came the uncomfortable paradox.

Classroom Pedagogy Shift

The students were being taught a question. Explore. Investigate. Use evidence. Think for yourself.

But the teacher increasingly felt, “Ask permission.” Stay inside the box. Don’t improvise.

The classroom had once been a live book. Now the teacher was being handed a box. And perhaps the deepest puzzle was not “Who was right?” It was:

What kind of governance allows a university to maintain standards without turning professional judgment into permission-seeking?

Academic Freedom and Authority Boundaries

The answer would require more than personality. It would require examining the actual institutional rules, the faculty member’s delegated authority, the course requirements, the restrictions imposed, and the principles governing academic freedom.

Because a boss has authority. But authority itself has boundaries. And perhaps that was the lesson hiding inside the whole case: Teach people to think, and eventually someone has to decide whether the teacher is allowed to think, too.

SUMMARY

  • The syllabus served as the base reference, but the class became a practical learning experience through real-life events.
  • Education became a joint meeting of students who took an active part in all activities outside the usual instructional setting.
  • The new government enforced stricter constraints, limiting options for creative teaching practices and eroding the autonomy of teachers.
  • The formulation of instructional options was increasingly a product of the tension between academic autonomy and institutional power.
  • Effective learning requires teachers who are free to reflect and develop within the limits of their power.
